NRA Annual Meeting is cancelled
Interesting perspectives on why the meeting was cancelled and potential unintended consequences
Rumors that the NRAAM would be cancelled have been floating around for a while.
The official statement on the cancellation is here: https://home.nra.org/announcements/important-announcement-nra-annual-meeting-cancellation/
There are a number of interesting implications of this cancellation.
The indispensable NRA in Danger Blog https://nraindanger.wordpress.com/2021/08/24/nra-houston-meeting-is-cancelled/ points out that the newly elected board members do not take office until the board meeting that is AFTER the NRAAM. That means the current board, with all of the resignations, is still in place. There is no announced plan for the replacement NRAAM or board meeting at this point. It also means that we could see a repeat of the 2020 Tucson style meetings. An open question is will the NRA Board meet before a rescheduled NRAAM. and whether any board vacancies will be filled.
Also it is not clear how the write in candidates fared in the 2021 election and where they stand in order of succession should vacancies occur on the board. A note to NRA Secretary John Frazer asking this question has not received a response.
Bitter, the author of the Shall Not Be Questioned Blog points out a number of key implications. Bitter’s first post\ after the announcement, https://www.pagunblog.com/2021/08/24/nra-meeting-off/ hits on the impact for petition candidates for the 2022 election :””What bothers me is that I can’t help but wonder if this is also in part due to potential of unfilled board seats since they literally ran out of people willing to be on the board combined with the fact that they now get to use the excuse to play around the dates petition candidates have to get on the ballot. Maybe I’m too cynical in my opinion there, but it’s not like there isn’t reason to be these days.” The dates also make it impossible for any member initiated petitions to recall officers or board members per Article IX of the by-laws.
Bitter also posted thoughts on other reasons that may have factored into the decision to cancel the NRAAM. https://www.pagunblog.com/2021/08/25/why-did-nra-cancel/. Was it the Money, the Optics or the potential Loss of Power from a members revolt at the meeting?
And while all this is going on, there is still a hearing on September 9 on the Members Intervention on the NY Attorney General case against the NRA. David Codrea has a good summary of the issues and action on his post at Ammoland https://www.ammoland.com/2021/08/nra-restructuring-and-billing-documents-show-need-for-honest-stewardship/
Further updates will be posted as they occur.
