"you can be remembered as one who defended NRA in the moment of its greatest danger. At a moment when others were willing to risk NRA’s destruction so long as they could cling to their personal power"
Dear NRA Director and NRA Director Candidate:
We all are proud to belong to the NRA, a group that for 150 years has stood for patriotism, freedom, and all that was best in this country. You can take greater pride in that its members have chosen you to sit on the board.
With that honor comes a duty, to protect our organization and the cause which it represents. That duty now calls, more urgently than at any time in your career. NRA’s very existence is at stake, very literally.
The enclosed book is presented by a former NRA director, and life member of nearly 30 years, in hopes it will inform you as to the peril posed to the organization that we all love.
The board has long trusted NRA’s leadership to do the right thing.
But now we have learned that Wayne misused members’ money to pay for expensive family vacations in the Bahamas and in Europe. More NRA money went for private jets to ferry his wife and her niece around.
We know that Wayne and Susan, in conjunction with Ackerman McQueen, planned to buy themselves a $6 million mansion with NRA money.
We’ve seen how NRA treasurer Woody Phillips was fired from his previous job, fired for embezzling money. He repeatedly “took the Fifth” when asked in bankruptcy court how he handled NRA’s monies. Took the Fifth!
The New York Attorney General can prove all this, and much more. She will argue that the board cannot save NRA from corruption: knowing these things it re-elected Wayne twice, without daring to investigate. The board chose for NRA’s president the chair of the Audit Committee, which had covered things up. It “fixed” the member meetings to keep the members from asking their own questions. The board can’t cure corruption because it has bought into it, she will say, so the only cure is to end the corporation. She will put the board as well as the leadership on trial. When she wins, and she will, millions of members will be outraged, and they will see you as responsible.
The leadership said it had obtained a new directors’ insurance policy, but refused to give you copies. Now we know why. The policy gives no protection: it doesn’t cover anything related to matters the NY Attorney General has spelled out in a 180-page document, nor any decisions made before August 2021. If lawsuits are brought, you are on your own. The leadership has not only put your good names on the line but also your homes.
We face a historic moment, the most crucial in NRA’s history. This is both a blessing and a burden. A burden, because a directorship is now more than an honor, it requires a decision. A blessing, because that decision means you can be remembered as one who defended NRA in the moment of its greatest danger. At a moment when others were willing to risk NRA’s destruction so long as they could cling to their personal power and riches.
Thank you for your commitment to NRA. Its millions of members, your fellow shooters, and activists, the people who elected you, await your decision.
